HOC SPOTLIGHT
Shining light on stories that move the culture.

HOC SELECT
Film of the Month curated by HOC.
Thandie is a compelling South African film that offers a rare and intimate look into the collision of tradition and modernity. Protagonist Thandie is forced to become the anchor of her family when her mother's severe illness sparks a profound spiritual debate: is it a medical condition or an ancestral calling requiring Sangoma initiation? As Thandie navigates this crisis and prepares for her sacred Umemulo purity ceremony, she faces a moral test from a manipulative, married suitor whose financial assistance comes with a heavy emotional price. Highly recommended for its authentic cultural detail, powerful themes of duty and sacrifice, and a dramatic, bittersweet ending that perfectly sets up the complexity of adulthood.
